Watch Run The Jewels Use Facts to Defend Rioting in Ferguson

Run The Jewels’ Killer Mike and El-P have always taken aim at injustice through music. The socially minded MCs feature in a newly released BBC video, which finds the pair addressing the validity of riot tactics in addition to the lies our institutions regularly feed us.

“So when people say riots don’t work… but Ferguson was over 60 percent as a black community,” Mike noted. “They had less than 60 percent representation in politics, far less. Post riots, they have two new black city council members. They have actual advocates in the community now. They had the police chief retire. If it was argued riots worked for Ferguson, absolutely they did.”

The clip comes within days of the one-year anniversary of Michael Brown’s unnatural death and the protests that followed. Killer Mike has been among the most vocal in hip-hop when it comes to acknowledging tragedy and pressing a need for change, from tearful speeches at shows to touring schools around the country.
