Tokischa, Twin Shadow & Ambar Lucid Headline Mixto x Spotify Singles

In celebration of the start of Our Heritage Month, Spotify has released its first-ever Mixto x Spotify Singles recordings, a spinoff of its popular Spotify Singles series – this time with a distinct Latine flare.

Headlining the new series are rapper Tokischa, singer Twin Shadow and singer Ambar Lucid. Each artist recorded a cover from a musician who inspires their own music. They also reimagined one of their own tracks.

For Lucid, she recorded her own version of Billie Eilish’s “Billie Bossa Nova” and renamed it “Ambar Bossa Nova.” She also revisited her 2021 EP Get Lost in the Music to record a new version of her single “Lizard,” which she says is now set in an “alternate universe” from the original song.

“I love Billie’s music, so adding my own lyrical twist to ‘Billie Bossa Nova’ was lots of fun,” Lucid said in a statement. “There are so many bops in [the Mixto] playlist, it radiates queen of wands energy!”

Tokischa contributed to the series with a cover of La Lupe’s 1967 salsa hit “La Tirana” by adding a little electric guitar to the mix. She also recorded an acoustic version of her single “El Rey De La Popola.”

“I identify with La Lupe and especially with what the song ‘La Tirana’ represents,” she said in a statement. “I think that Mixto playlist is important for those artists who express their art through their voice and not a specific genre.”

For his part, Twin Shadow covered Kali Uchis’ song “Telepatía” and also gave his acoustic track “Alemania” more of a retro-pop style. When covering “Telepatía,” he said he wanted to dissect it and try to make it his own.

“I love the song and am always glad to have a new appreciation for something once I’ve dissected it,” he said in a statement. “I think that Latin music touches people because it lives very much in the present, and the future of Latin music is happening right now. I think that is why it will continue to be relevant and affect people profoundly forever.”
