This Is How Emily In Paris Should Have Dressed

It’s been four months since Emily In Paris hit Netflix, and people are still talking about the lead character’s déroutant style choices. Emily, portrayed by Lily Collins, was meant to be the next Carrie Bradshaw, gracing our TV screens rocking the best of Parisian fashion. Only problem? The show’s costuming missed the mark. For instance, Mathilde Carton, editor in chief of French Grazia, told Vogue, “From a fashion point of view, they are too bright, too showy, too cartoonish, and not versatile enough to be worn through the day.” She isn’t wrong: to be a true French girl implies a style that oozes ease and effortlessness. Emily’s bold berets, flashy coats, and sky-high heels are as effortless as carrying a tote with a baguette hanging out of it.

What is interesting, however, is Collins’s personal style off-screen: It’s much more the vibe of a true French girl vibe. It’s what Emily In Paris wants to be. Case in point: Yesterday, Collins was spotted out in Los Angeles wearing an easy outfit that was polished, put-together, but not over-styled—all signifiers of French fashionistas. She sported cropped jeans with a slight flare, a red turtleneck for a pop of color, and an oversized coat that was tailored and utilitarian. Classic Gucci loafers gave the outfit a quiet, luxurious finish. Similarly, back in December, Collins also ran an errand in ripped jeans, a leather coat, and matching suede flats—a Celine bag paying homage to the best of French luxury.

Considering the series has been renewed for a second season, it’s not too late for Emily to have a subdued fashion makeover that channels these off-duty looks. Perhaps Collins should just bring her own wardrobe to set in order to rightfully capture the mood. Un solution facile!
