Back in 2015, SLIPKNOT singer Corey Taylor instructed Noisey concerning the making of the band’s debut album: “We went into this so constructive; there have been no expectations by any means. Because who we have been, and what we have been as a band, there have been really much less expectations. No one anticipated us to win, least of all us, to be completely fucking sincere, man. We went into that album so younger and inexperienced and simply ecstatic to make our first album. After we recorded it, it was, like, ‘Well, now what?’ We needed to wait six months simply to see what occurred. We acquired added to Ozzfest ’99 on the final second.”
He continued: “True story. We’re out in Malibu on prime of a mountain. Nine assholes from Iowa, no concept what the fuck we’re doing. [Laughs] With this mad scientist, Ross Robinson, serving to us create this loopy fucking album. Really, it was a clean test, metaphorically; we have been enjoying with home cash. Nobody knew what would occur. Every different band on Roadrunner was anticipated to explode and never us. MACHINE HEAD simply put out a brand new album on the time. AMEN was ending their file at Indigo Ranch earlier than we moved in, and I used to be satisfied AMEN was going to be a lot larger than us. I really like these first two albums. They’re unbelievably wonderful. So right here we’re, these 9 youngsters enjoying heavy steel, carrying masks, carrying coveralls, doing loopy shit, our highest expectation was that we have been perhaps a band that bought 200,000 albums. Which on the time was sufficient to maintain you on the highway.
“And we did Ozzfest ’99, and you may inform one thing was taking place,” he added. “Something was changing into fucking loopy. The album hadn’t even come out but. It got here out midway via that tour. So actually there was nothing to organize anyone for something. And then after Ozzfest ’99 ended, we had three days off and we went proper into the COAL CHAMBER tour the place we have been third on the invoice, proper under MACHINE HEAD. Halfway via that tour, we ended up switching locations with MACHINE HEAD and changing into direct help. Because we’d play, and that is nothing towards any of those bands, nothing in any respect, we might play and half the viewers would depart after. We did not have anyplace to go after we performed, so we might exit to the viewers and hang around, watch the opposite bands, and we might watch folks streaming out — shopping for our merch and heading out. So it turned some extent the place no one needed to take us out on the highway with them. So we needed to headline out of necessity. Meanwhile, the album goes gold and we did not understand it. We did not get the plaque for it till February 2 of 2000. When we acquired the plaque, we came upon inside two months it could go platinum. Then it went double platinum. People do not perceive simply how fucking insane it was. We’re sitting again going, ‘What?’ Suddenly we are the largest band on Roadrunner, and nobody ready us. We did not know what the fuck was occurring. We had shitty administration on the time, and it was madness. It all began as a result of we went up a mountain, and had an absolute fucking blast making that album. It went via three folks’s palms to combine it.”
Taylor went on to inform the story of how Clown, Robinson and drummer Joey Jordison, “broke into the studio” the place the grasp tapes have been held as a result of they weren’t proud of the mixes they have been getting. He recalled: “They stole the tapes, and blended it themselves! [Laughs] I believe Paul [Gray, bass] was there too. I had to return to Iowa to return to work, and I get a name from Clown: ‘By the way in which, we dedicated grand larceny; we simply stole our personal fucking album.’ And they sat down and blended it as a result of nobody else understood it. When you are the primary, nobody is aware of. There’s not monitor file for it. So we might get these shitty fucking mixes that have been both too skinny, too bass-laden. People did not perceive what this noise was. So we ended up mixing it ourselves, man.
“There’s so many loopy tales from that first album,” he continued. “I can look again and smile that it is occurred to us, and the next years. It all began from the primary album and all of the loopy shit. Living off 20 bucks per week, having to cover your ramen as a result of your asshole bandmates have been attempting to steal it. Having to give you 30 methods to make ramen so you do not lose your thoughts, that is how we lived. It was so insane, but it surely was so superior as a result of we have been in it. All the discuss, dreaming was over. It was time to do the work. And we did. The relaxation is fucking historical past, man.”
