Selenators, say hello to your first Selena Gomez song of 2018: “Back To You” has arrived.
After the 25-year-old revealed on Instagram on May 1 that the track — which is part of the 13 Reasons Why Season 2 soundtrack — would be out on May 10, she followed through with her promise by debuting it with Zane Lowe on Beats 1 radio. The song starts with Gomez's smooth voice over an acoustic guitar, the chorus building to a dynamic beat drop reminiscent of her Kygo and Marshmello dance collaborations.
Gomez revealed to Lowe that while her first 13 Reasons Why track, “Only You,” was a great song, it was more for the show's sake than hers. “Back To You,” on the other hand, is a “very special project” that Gomez said she wanted to give to Season 2. “I want it to be a beautiful message in a really complicated way, but really fun,” she said before premiering the song.
While she didn't drop any hints about what inspired the song, it's clear that she's longing to rekindle a past relationship: “I want to hold you when I’m not supposed to/ When I’m lying close to someone else,” Gomez sings at the top of the chorus, later declaring, “if I could do it all again, I know I’d go back to you.”
The 13 Reasons Why (Season 2) Soundtrack will be released on May 18, and is available for pre-order here. Listen to “Back To You” below.
