Mary J. Blige, LL Cool J And More Nominated For 2021 Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has unveiled the 2021 nominees with a handful of Black music artists appearing on the ballot. Jay-Z, Mary J. Blige, Chaka Khan, LL Cool J, Dionne Warwick, Tina Turner, and Fela Kuti make up nearly half of the 16 potential honorees.

“This remarkable ballot reflects the diversity and depth of the artists and music the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame celebrates,” said John Sykes, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation Chairman, in a statement. “These nominees have left an indelible impact on the sonic landscape of the world and influenced countless artists that have followed them.”

This marks Jay-Z and Fela Kuti’s first nomination. Although she’s inducted Nina Simone and Solomon Burke, Blige also appears on a ballot for the first time. LL Cool J has been nominated 6 times, including in 2010, 2011, 2014, 2018, and 2019. Although Chaka Khan was considered last year with her bandmates Rufus, she has also been nominated as a solo artist in 2016 and 2017. Tina Turner was inducted in 1991 with Ike Turner. If she receives the honor this year, she’ll be the next woman to be inducted twice into the Rock Hall following Stevie Nicks.

Starting today until April 30, fans can take part in the Fan Vote on Rockhall.com and choose up to five nominees per day on the official fan’s ballot.
