Lady Gaga’s Latest Transformation Is Pure Old Hollywood Glamour

Lady Gaga’s fashion moments can be broken down by era. After getting otherworldly for Born This Way, turning into a rhinestone cowgirl during the promotion of Joanne and pulling out museum-worthy conceptual pieces for Artpop, she’s worn nearly every look imaginable. After filming Ridley Scott’s House of Gucci, she appears to have settled on her next reinvention. Gaga has spent the past two days in New York at the Plaza Hotel, and the glamorous venue appears to be influencing her outfit choices. A filming location used for cinema classics like North by Northwest, Funny Girl, and The Great Gatsby, the Plaza has been host to Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Greta Garbo, and countless other vintage celebrities. Fittingly, Gaga’s fashions while staying at the hotel have skewed classic, elegant, and evocative of Old Hollywood.

On Tuesday, she breezed into town wearing Alessandra Rich’s petal pink ruched midi dress and a petite Fendi handbag. The look continued the pastel color scheme Gaga wore on her flight to the city. But where her Petals and Peacocks strawberry print separates skewed youthful, Rich’s creation was refined and grown-up. Polka dots and ruffles don’t have to be saccharine, and Gaga’s addition of Jimmy Choo stilettos and cat-eye Gentle Monster sunglasses gave the outfit a grown-up polish.

Hours later, Gaga pulled out another showstopper, a voluminous look from Sarah Burton’s spring/summer 2021 collection for Alexander McQueen. All-black with tiers of Chantilly lace and a corseted bodice, the look was stellar when Burton introduced it in December on model Nyagua Ruea within the brand’s lookbook. Gaga played up the retro vibe by adding on her shades and an old-school it-bag: Saint Laurent’s horned Mombasa, a mainstay from Tom Ford’s years at the brand.

Yesterday’s Giuseppe di Morabito puff-sleeved dress—black, white, and covered in floral embroidery—certainly kept with the classic theme, as did her choice in accessories. Drop earrings from Oscar de la Renta, glittering diamond rings by Ana Khouri, and a Mark Cross trunk clutch polished off the look. Cross, a favorite accessories designer of Grace Kelly, was an inspired choice.

Gaga and stylists Sandra Amador and Tom Eerebout know how to create a look with drama and have turned her New York trip into a fashion showcase. Much like their work with the star during her A Star is Born awards season appearances, the clothes have been dramatic crowd pleasers that speak to Gaga’s place on Hollywood’s A-list. As she has some time left in Manhattan, that can only mean more great style is on the horizon.
