Elle Fanning (as Catherine the Great) Posts an 18th-Century Spin On the Pregnancy Reveal

Last night on Instagram, Elle Fanning posted an entirely new kind of baby bump reveal: one in an 18th-century corset. The actress has been playing the role of Catherine the Great in the series The Great, known in part for its stellar rendition of period clothing, complete with a bevy of petticoats and frill. In her latest promotional image for the show’s second season, Fanning went bare belly with a false pregnant stomach that peeked out of an embroidered blue corset with blush pink lacing up the sides and bows fastened at the straps. She wore it with a pair of unfastened, loose white pants.

While it was only for film, the post felt refreshing. Not only is it totally in the style of a celebrity pregnancy reveal, but also the concept of period dressing has lately been top of mind for the fashion world. Think: expanded proportions of homemade bustles and socially-distanced XXL panniers, not to mention the hype around period dramas like Bridgerton. Fanning’s take on the oh-so-vintage look is sweet and precious. Maybe it will even lend some inspiration to new parents-to-be looking for an eye-catching announcement.
