Since its inaugural year, Burning Man‘s themes have pushed the norms and sparked curiosity across the globe. Each year, we’ve been graced with captivating themes. Themes include Rites of Passage, Mysteria: The Secret Rites of Burning Man, The Wheel of Time, and Da Vinci’s Workshop. And that’s just to name a few. Recently, Burning Man has disclosed its 2020 theme: The Multiverse.

The Multiverse

The word multiverse is defined as an infinite realm of being or potential being of which the universe is regarded as a part or instance. Throughout time, we’ve seen a number of important historical figures and fictional characters address the term. Walt Whitman, an American poet, essayist, and journalist who was a part of the transition between transcendentalism and realism, once said,

“Do I contradict myself? Very well, then I contradict myself. I am large, I contain multitudes.”

Then, there’s Alice in Wonderland. This young girl fell through a rabbit hole into a fantasy world populated by peculiar, anthropomorphic creatures, and stated,

“Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.”

Stuart Mangrum has reported the beloved Black Rock City event “explores the quantum kaleidoscope of possibility, […] It’s an invitation to ponder the real, the surreal and the pataphysical, and a chance to encounter our alternate selves who may have followed, or are following, or will follow different decision-paths to divergent Black Rock City realities.”

As the anticipation for next year’s highly anticipated event continues to grow, one lingering question remains: “what will you be in the Multiverse of Burning Man 2020?” We absolutely can’t wait to see what the artists, participants, and other creative teams have in store for 2020. Will you be attending?
